We would like to wish all American veterans a happy Veterans' Day - thank you for your service. By the way, this year we welcomed our 100th US Veteran back to Berlin in our Welcome Home Program - Denise Bowman, at the center of this picture, directly under the shield.

In June of this year, Juliane Forsyth, a recipient of our City of Berlin scholarship, visited Berlin for one month. During her stay, she attended language lessons and completed an internship at the press office of the Berliner Feuerwehr (Berlin Fire Department). The department recently published this blog post about her visit, which we wanted to share with you.

“There is an invisible bond that connects firefighters and that is what I want to show in my pictures.”

The original German is available here: http://www.berliner-feuerwehr.de/intern/status-5/there-is-an-invisible-bond-between-firefighters-02102017/show/

Here is the English translation:

"There is an invisible bond between firefighters..."

“There is an invisible bond that connects firefighters and that is what I want to show in my pictures.”

Juliane Forsyth is a young artist from New York whose big dream is to head out with one of the fire trucks of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) as a firefighter herself. Her father as well as her uncle worked for the FDNY and were deployed on September 11th.

As part of a scholarship, the young photographer spent two months as an intern in our press office here at the Berlin Fire Department.

In her project “Brotherhood,” Julianne would like to illustrate the invisible bond between the Berlin Fire Department and the FDNY in pictures.

During her time in Berlin, the 23-year-old escorted our firefighters from the Urban Friedrichshain and Neukölln firehouses on calls and visited four additional firehouses as well as the Berlin Fire and Rescue Service Academy (BFRA).
During this time, she captured more than 1000 moments in time with her camera. Her book will be published in 2018.
In late September, Jules made another visit to the Berlin Fire Department and could not resist climbing out of the airplane right into a waiting fire truck.

Our colleagues were more than happy to put on the gifts that she had brought with her – shirts from the FDNY – for the pictures that were made.

Many years of friendship connect the Berlin Fire Department and the FDNY and we are looking forward to seeing them again.

We wish Jules the best of luck for her current application with the FDNY and eagerly await her pictures.

In the second week of their stay in Los Angeles, our Berlin forestry students participated in a workshop at Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC), met with renowned landscape designer Mia Lehrer, and explored the unique flora of Joshua Tree National Park, among other activities. On Saturday they will arrive back in Berlin. We would again like to thank all of the partners involved in this project: Sister Cities of Los Angeles, City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Los Angeles Trade–Technical College, The Los Angeles Parks Foundation, and warmest of all the host families who welcomed the students into their homes. We couldn’t have done it without you!
