Today, 16 years after the September 11th attacks, the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation remembers the many victims of this horrible event. Our thoughts are with all of the families affected.

Immediately after the attacks, the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation launched the “Berlin helps the USA” charitable campaign. Thanks to large and generous donations from more than one thousand private citizens, organizations and companies from Berlin and across Germany, a total of 1 million DM was raised.

These funds were invested to create the City of Berlin Scholarship. The interest generated supports college and university scholarships for the children of New York firefighters whose health has been seriously impaired as a result of their deployment on September 11 and during the cleanup efforts in the months and weeks that followed, leaving them unable to work.

Since then, 34 young New Yorkers have received scholarships and one additional scholarship was funded by the Stiftung Luftbruckendank. Since 2006, the first year in which interest was generated, the scholarship has paid out $645,600 in funding. Twenty-four children of firefighters have since earned their degrees with help from the scholarship.

Information about the City of Berlin Scholarship and the scholarship recipients is available on our website at http://www.cc-stiftung.de/index.php/city-of-berlin-scholarship/.

Our thoughts are with the people of Texas who have lost loved ones or their homes as a result of Hurricane Harvey. We wish all those affected the strength they need to face the challenges ahead.

On June 25th, it was time for our summer program “Diversity and Tolerance in Berlin”, an educational program for L.A.-area school teachers, organized in partnership with the Museum of Tolerance as part of the Berlin-L.A. Sister City Relationship.

The ten day Berlin-based program is intended to help teachers gain insight into the cultural, political, social and economic factors that cumulatively resulted in the Holocaust, while at the same time bringing them into contact with the vibrant diversity that exists today in Berlin.

The schedule includes educational visits to historic sites in and around Berlin that played an important role in the history of the Holocaust. Throughout the week, participants meet with eyewitnesses, survivors, distinguished members of various ethnic and religious groups in Berlin. This year, for the first time, the program also addressed LGBT history in Berlin with a visit to the Schwules Museum*.

It was a pleasure getting to know all of the participants in this year’s program and sharing our history and knowledge with them. We hope to see them again soon, either in L.A. or in Berlin!
